Tezuka, Osamu, 1928-1989; pioneer Japanese manga and anime; “god of manga”

Osamu Tezuka remains one of the most widely acknowledged manga artists of post-war Japan. An artist whose influence has been felt internationally for his development of Astro Boy (1952-1968), Princess Knight (1953-1956), and many more serialized manga. His total output is comprised of well over 700 individual titles, many of which are novel-length manga or anime. Shorter graphic novellas and collections of short-stories in manga are also common in his output. Working occasionally with western classical mythology, Tezuka pioneered sophisticated manga for adults (seinen), young men (shonen), young women (shojo), and other groups.
