Consequently, scholars have debated the mythological subject matter.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Philadelphia Museum of Art titles it \u201cThe Birth of Venus\u201d; however, in the label (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.philamuseum.org\/collections\/permanent\/102996.html\">click<\/a>) the Museum states that \u201cothers see the sea god Neptune\u2019s marine procession\u201d, which would likely make that central figure Amphitrite, Neptune\u2019s divine consort. Another option floated by the Museum is that Galatea is in the center.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <em>OGCMA<\/em> sides with the interpretation that this is Amphitrite and indexes the picture as Amphitrite1.0029_Poussin, entitling it \u201cTriumph of Neptune and Amphitrite\u201d [= Poseidon1.0067_Poussin]. Many others agree.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>OGCMA<\/em> lists for Poussin under \u201cAphrodite, Birth of\u201d two items \u2014 a) a set of three drawings archived at the Galleria Corsini, Rome, at the Mus\u00e9e Cond\u00e9, Chantilly, and at the Stockholm Natinoalmuseum [AphroditeBirth1.0046_Poussin]; and b) a drawing entitled \u201cVenus Landing on Cythera\u201d at the Mus\u00e9e Bonnat, Bayonne [AphroditeBirth1.0047_Poussin]. If the present painting depicts Aphrodite\u2019s birth, then it should likely be listed at AphroditeBirth2.0046_Poussin.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For the reading that this is Galatea\u2019s Triumph, one should compare it to four Poussin items listed in <em>OGCMA <\/em>s.v. \u201cGalatea\u201d, but especially \u201cThe Triumph of Galatea\u201d for which two drawings are extant in the Stockholm Nationalmuseum (Galatea2.0050_Poussin).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Because the Philadelphia Museum\u2019s web-based label does not offer bibliographic support, deeper study of this intriguing dispute should go through the bibliographic sources offered by Reid in <em>OGCMA <\/em>ad loc.
